Knitta on Montague Street

With the simple pattern in hand - and some HUGE size 19 knitting needles, I met KnitKnit and Red Bridge Studio at the Etsy labs to make sure i was doing this right! I balled up the yarn, so I could cast on with three strands at a time, to make the cozy nice and thick! And off I went! KnitKnit even showed me how to do the purl stitch (which is just like the knit stitch, but in reverse!).

Once I was somewhat certain I could take on this project, I signed up to participate with Knitta Please and the Montague Street BID (Business Improvement District) who have developed - 69 Meters, a public-art project to cover the 69 parking meters down Montague Street in Brooklyn, NY with knitted cozies in blues, pinks and greens. With the installation on the evening of May 13th, and the final pieces due by May 5th, that doesnt leave me much time to get my cozy on!

Wow, my piece is really coming out well! At least to me for my first knitting project. Okay, I have some dropped stitches, and no idea how I'm gonna bind off here! But I'll solve that problem when I come to it!

I Learned to knit For Knitta!

A bad crocheter at best, I have always wanted too try my hand at knitting. The knots just look more elegant and wearable to me. Though the desire has been there for quite some time, the actual motivation has not, so a pair of borrowed needles have sat idle for a while.

Then, several weeks ago, an email came through to my inbox about The {NewNew} partnering on a public arts project with Knitta Please! A knitting group that takes knitting to the streets and tags up the local environment with knitted sleeves on sign posts and parking meters.... you can even spot their handy work on the Welcome to Brooklyn sign when you turn off the Williamsburg Bridge. And they were looking for more knitters to help with a project right here in Brooklyn.

Well, never one to back down from a public art project and the challenge of learning how to knit, I decided that THIS was the motivation I have been looking for! My first step was to take out those dusty needles and some yarn and scouring the internet (mainly YouTube) for some knitting tutorials. The one I felt was most helpful to me was Threadbanger's. the language is simple, and I replayed it over and over again until I cast on and did a few stitches. Even that made me giddy with pride. I practiced with some enormous size 19 needles (which I wouldn't recommend), but it did help me see what i was doing clear as day.

But something didn't seem right, maybe the needles were too big, but this thing couldn't be a stitch! I needed help. Stay tuned for the next installment - KnitKnit and Red Bridge Studio at the Etsy Labs try to help me!

And photos to come!

New summer display

Here's a quick snapshot of a little tee shirt pennant banner I am making - inspired by Astulabee's mini banner tutorial at the Etsy labs. All the tees are cut out, and then i will sew them all together with a ribbon. The whole banner will decorate my tent all summer long at the Park Slope 5th Avenue Fair [MAY 17], Art Star in Philly [MAY 30+31], the Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair [i'll be there JUNE 6], and Seventh Heaven [JUNE 21st] - it's gonna be a full summer!

New Indie Purchase - May Luk Ceramics

This past weekend i vended at the Brooklyn Indie Market's opening weekend - and great fun was had by all. Always nice to start the season with friend's in your local community.

Well, needless to say, I couldn't leave without something, and this is my new treasure.

Handcrafted and kiln fired by MayLuk in her Brooklyn studio with a great dynamic montage of images - fighter plains from different angles and typography all embossed into the clay before firing. I had bought a great brooklyn platter from her for some friends for Christmas, though I secretly wanted to keep it, and couldn't resist taking this one home.
